Semester:
Second Four-month period
Subject type:
Basic Education
Module:
---
1. General information
The goals of the subject are:
- Know and know how to interpret Entity/Relationship and Relational data models.
- Know the rules of transformation from conceptual schema to relational schema.
- Know the theory of normalization and identify normal forms.
- Know how to interpret and construct SQL statements
- Manage a DBMS to organize, structure, manage and present information.
The goals of the subject aligned with the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda are: O4. Quality education; O5: Equality of gender.
This basic training subject is part of the process of acquiring competencies in information technologies . Having acquired the basic skills in Digital Publishing and Information Retrieval, the fundamentals of databases are a precedent to the design, implementation and performance of information systems.
2. Learning results
- Design databases.
- Apply the design phases of a database.
- Represents the model of a database in a particular Database Management System.
- Create databases with a DBMS to organize, store and manage information according to the organization's goals.
- Applies the SQL language to define, create, query, control and modify relational databases.
Importance of learning results: Relational, document and hybrid databases are at the technological base that supports document management systems and information unit management systems. Consequently, the adequate performance of the design, implementation and management tasks is key to the acquisition of future competencies.
3. Syllabus
1. Databases: concepts
2. Database management systems
3. Database design and implementation
4. Database languages
5. Implementation of metadata standards
6. Documentary and full-text databases
4. Academic activities
The academic activities consist of:
- Theoretical classes: In which the professor will present the theoretical contents and will submit them to discussion with the students.
- Practical classes: Through them, the students will put into practice the theoretical contents exposed by the teacher.
- Individual work tutored by the teacher: The assignments will deal with topics related to the syllabus, proposed by the students and/or the teacher and authorized by the teacher.
- Tutoring: Their objective is to resolve any doubts that may arise and to follow up on individual practical work.
5. Assessment system
FIRST CALL:
- Theoretical-practical final exam of the subject syllabus: 35% of the final grade.
- Development of database design exercises in face-to-face practical classes: 45% of the final grade.
- Preparation and presentation of an individual work on the design, development and implementation of a database system: 20% of the final grade.
The tests will only be compensable if at least 50% of the maximum possible score is obtained.
The teacher may require at any time of the continuous evaluation process to the student information directly related to the development and execution of the tests.
The evaluation criteria will be based on
- Level of theoretical knowledge of database design methods and techniques.
- Level of success in the practical application of database design methods and techniques.
- Understanding and correspondence with the theoretical and practical contents exposed to the student and contained in the reference materials.
- Organizational, writing and argumentation skills, and execution of tasks.
SECOND CALL
Global assessment test: identical to that of the first call.
